{"id":3196,"date":"2019-03-27T19:54:13","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T19:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carecomputers.co.uk\/?p=3196"},"modified":"2019-03-27T19:54:13","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T19:54:13","slug":"world-backup-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/creativeideasfactory.co.uk\/carenew\/world-backup-day\/","title":{"rendered":"World Backup Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A message from one of our partners, Acronis, a leader in backups and security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">As World Backup Day 2019 approaches this Sunday, the results of Acronis\u2019 global annual survey regarding the public\u2019s knowledge and habits of data protection are in \u2013 and with 65 percent of consumers reporting data loss by themselves or their family members, it looks like 2018 was a particularly dangerous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">In addition, as CEOs and other C-level executives increasingly lose their jobs following data incidents, the 2019 survey also marked the first time we\u2019ve polled business professionals regarding their knowledge and data protection habits as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">The findings of this year\u2019s World Backup Day Survey reveal some notable contradictions between consumer beliefs and practical choices, as well as an interesting contrast between the value people and businesses place on their data\u2019s value and the steps they take to protect it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">World Backup Day Survey<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">World Backup Day is the globally recognized holiday to highlight the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"s14dydj4-27 bMURE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acronis.com\/en-us\/blog\/posts\/growth-and-importance-world-backup-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">importance of data protection through backups<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong> Celebrated on March 31, it\u2019s a simple reminder: if someone doesn\u2019t want data loss to make them look like an April fool, they need to create regular, secure backups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">For four years, Acronis\u2019 annual survey has gauged consumers\u2019 backup habits, cyberthreat awareness, and data loss experiences. This year we polled individuals and business users in 11 countries around the globe: the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Bulgaria, Singapore, and Japan.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"s14dydj4-2 gwEHCb\">Backups are up, but so is data loss<\/h3>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">While almost all consumers and businesses backed up their devices this year, significant portions still lost data.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"s14dydj4-12 iOgODC\">\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">93 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers and\u00a0<strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">97 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses back up their data at least once a year. Of those,\u00a0<strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">73 percent\u00a0<\/strong>of consumers perform backups monthly or weekly and\u00a0<strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">86 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses perform backups monthly, weekly, or daily.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Despite that backup,\u00a0<strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">65 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers (or their immediate family) lost data from a computer or mobile device and\u00a0<strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">29 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses suffered a data loss event that led to downtime.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">\u201cAt first glance, those two findings might seem completely incompatible \u2013 how can more data be lost if nearly everyone is backing up,\u201d said James Slaby, Director of Cyber Protection at Acronis. \u201cYet there are hints at why these numbers look this way in the survey. People are using more devices and accessing their data from more places than ever before, which creates more opportunities to lose data. They might back up their laptop, but if they didn\u2019t back up the smartphone they just forgot in a cab, they\u2019re still losing data.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"s14dydj4-2 gwEHCb\">Half measures don\u2019t provide full protection<\/h3>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Based on the responses, consumers rely on more devices in their daily lives and claim to value the data on these devices, but they aren\u2019t taking sufficient steps to adequately ensure their data is safe. They overwhelmingly store their backups locally, but few use the cloud to keep an off-site copy as required by the best practice\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"s14dydj4-27 bMURE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acronis.com\/en-us\/blog\/posts\/3-2-1-simple-rule-complex-data-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3-2-1 rule of backup<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Interestingly, the vast majority of businesses aren\u2019t following the 3-2-1 rule either, but for a different reason. They almost exclusively rely on cloud backups without keeping a local copy for fast, convenient recoveries.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"s14dydj4-12 iOgODC\">\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">45 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers have more than four devices at home<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">70 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers would pay between $50 and $500 to recover their lost information<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">90 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers and\u00a0<strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">73 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses don\u2019t back up to a hybrid of local and cloud storage destinations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">While those findings are surprising given how attached respondents are to their data, it makes sense when paired with two key findings from the survey: what respondents find important in a backup solution and how well respondents understand the threats their most important data faces.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"s14dydj4-2 gwEHCb\">Consumers contradictory value of backup<\/h3>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">To understand what personal users and professionals most value in a backup, we asked respondents which of the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"s14dydj4-27 bMURE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acronis.com\/en-us\/blog\/posts\/acronis-true-image-2019-cyber-protection-creating-most-reliable-backup-home-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five vectors of cyber protection<\/a>,<\/span><\/strong> safety, accessibility, privacy, authenticity, and security, was most important to their goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">The majority of consumers ranked \u201caccessibility\u201d (rapid access to backups that\u2019s affordable and easy-to-use) as their top priority in a backup solution. They also showed an unfortunately low awareness of some of the most looming cyberthreats in the world today:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"s14dydj4-12 iOgODC\">\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">46 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers don\u2019t know what ransomware is<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">53 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers don\u2019t know what cryptojacking is<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">53 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of consumers don\u2019t know what social engineering attacks are<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Between this lack of education and consumers desire for convenience, affordability, and ease-of-use above all other features, it makes perfect sense that they would opt for a purely local backup plan, more often than not to an external drive or USB. That said, consumers may not understand how simple and accessible backing up to the cloud can be.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"s14dydj4-1 knvoOo\">Businesses back up for safety and security<\/h2>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Alternately, businesses ranked \u201csafety\u201d (reliable backups that keep all data complete and recovery-ready) as their most important backup feature, a decision which makes sense given the many high profile\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a class=\"s14dydj4-27 bMURE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acronis.com\/en-us\/blog\/posts\/want-keep-your-job-mr-ceo-youd-better-take-data-security-seriously\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data breaches<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>and<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<a class=\"s14dydj4-27 bMURE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acronis.com\/en-us\/blog\/posts\/avoiding-cyber-mayhem-hard-lessons-catastrophic-attack-vfemailcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ransomware attacks<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>in recent years. Businesses have clearly taken these events, and their inherent costs, to heart:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"s14dydj4-12 iOgODC\">\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">61 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses are concerned or highly concerned about ransomware<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">60 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses are concerned or highly concerned about cryptojacking<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">61 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses are concerned or highly concerned about social engineering attacks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">With defense against these cyberthreats a clear focus for businesses, the extra attention to protection and governance offered by cloud services is undoubtedly a key motivator. However, businesses that exclusively rely on cloud backups may discover that even the most sophisticated cloud storage can\u2019t offer the speed, reliability, and peace of mind that comes from hybrid backup procedures.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"s14dydj4-2 gwEHCb\">Cyber protection recommendations for World Backup Day<\/h3>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Whether you are concerned about personal files or securing your company\u2019s business continuity, Acronis has four simple recommendations to help protect your data:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"s14dydj4-12 iOgODC\">\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">Always create backups of important data<\/strong>. Keep copies of the backup both locally (so it\u2019s available for fast, frequent recoveries) and in the cloud (to guarantee you have everything if a fire, flood or disaster hits your facilities).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">Ensure your operating system and software are current<\/strong>. Older versions of your OS and apps lack the bug fixes and security patches that help block cybercriminals from gaining access to your systems.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">Beware suspicious email, links, and attachments<\/strong>. Most virus and ransomware infections are the result of social engineering techniques that trick unsuspecting individuals into opening infected email attachments or clicking on links to websites that host malware.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"s14dydj4-11 iWgGqh\">\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\"><strong class=\"s14dydj4-14 gBjHJP\">Install anti-virus software<\/strong>\u00a0and enable automatic updates so your system is protected against common, well-known malware strains. Windows user should confirm that their Windows Defender is turned on and up-to-date.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"s14dydj4-2 gwEHCb\">Final thought<\/h3>\n<p class=\"s14dydj4-10 kiAEUp\">Acronis\u2019 2019 World Backup Day Survey provides an interesting insight into the mindset and habits that consumers and business users from around the world have regarding data protection and the latest threats. Clearly, both groups are aware of the need for backups, but there are gaps in how to best protect their data or where the latest threats to their data may come from.
